Magical Towns of Spain
The circular bus line 4 offers a convenient and different way to discover San Lorenzo de El Escorial, allowing you to tour the municipality at a leisurely pace and appreciate the transition between its historical heritage, its residential neighbourhoods, and the surrounding environment.
The tour begins at the Bus Station (Juan de Toledo street), the main arrival point to the town and very close to the historic centre and the monumental complex.
The bus travels along Juan de Toledo street, one of the main axes of San Lorenzo. In this section, the Colegio Inmaculada Concepción, which is deeply rooted in the town, and the building known as \"Las Torres\", belonging to the Comunidad de Madrid and easily recognisable in the urban landscape, stand out.
The line continues along the Guadarrama road, where the urban environment progressively opens up.
The next point is the El Escorial Hospital, a unique site that was not conceived as a conventional hospital, but as the result of the merger of the two existing hospital centres in the town. The current building was designed in 1934 by the architect **Rafael Bergamín** for the treatment of pulmonary diseases, especially tuberculosis, which was very widespread at that time, taking advantage of the environmental conditions of the mountains.
Before reaching Monte del Fraile street, the route diverts through the Monte Escorial residential area, passing by the Zaburdón sports complex, the main space dedicated to sport in the municipality.
Next, the route continues along Monte del Fraile Street and Luis Cervera Street, quiet residential areas close to the natural environment.
The bus then enters Las Pozas Street and Lepanto Street, established neighbourhoods that reflect the urban development of San Lorenzo de El Escorial during the 20th century.
The tour continues along Miguel de Unamuno Street and Cebadillas Street, located in an elevated area from which open views of Madrid and wide spaces of the surroundings can be enjoyed. This section also features the Convent of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns.
The line continues along Pinar Street and Carlos Ruiz Street, where the proximity to the mountain and the relationship with the landscape surrounding the town can once again be felt.
We move forward until we reach Floridablanca Street, which in this direction of the route allows us to discover some of the first urban developments of San Lorenzo. Here is the **Casa de Jacometrezo**, one of the first buildings constructed in the 16th century.
Next, the bus enters the neighbourhood of El Plantel, one of the most representative residential complexes from the beginning of the 20th century. This neighbourhood was built on the grounds of the former fruit tree nursery of **Felipe II** and was configured from 1912 around Leandro Rubio Street. The **Neo-Mudéjar** style predominates in its buildings, recognisable by the brick decoration, the friezes, and the wide eaves.
The journey continues towards the Plaza de San Antonio de los Alamillos, an open and wooded space that maintains the traditional character of the promenade areas. In this environment is also located the **Real Centro Universitario Escorial-María Cristina**, an academic and cultural institution of the town.
From here, the route runs through the monumental surroundings, passing in front of the **Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial**, ordered to be built by **Philip II** in the 16th century and declared a **UNESCO World Heritage site** in 1984, one of the most representative works of the Spanish Renaissance.
We continue towards the Plaza de la Virgen de Gracia, popularly known by the locals as \"el Laberinto\", and named after the patron saint of the municipality.
Finally, the line returns to the Bus Station, thus completing a circular route that allows for the discovery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial from multiple perspectives: historical, cultural, residential, and scenic.
Thank you for joining us on this tour. Enjoy the journey and your stay in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
