Historia y patrimonio

Founded in 1717 by Philip V to accommodate new troops in the town, it consists of three buildings that are integrated into the urban complex. They represent the first Bourbon work in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

The increase in the court entourage of the new dynasty and the different way of understanding the Monastery and its surroundings will be the determining bases of its construction. The Royal Quarters were built opposite the Cavalry barracks, using part of the land from some stables.

The building featured a central pavilion and two others at the ends, which were connected by intermediate volumes. All of them were two storeys high and were divided by solid rusticated pilasters. This characteristic reflects a more than possible French influence.

The building underwent successive renovations throughout its history and currently houses the headquarters of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (MADOC).

At the beginning of the 19th century, with the French Invasion, the Site became a defensive enclave of great importance. After their defeat and abandonment of the place in 1813, the French troops caused the burning of the main barracks, of which only their facades were preserved.

The lack of funds will prevent its reconstruction, so it will remain in ruins for several years. The building is divided into five parts that are sold to private individuals and converted into dwellings, although they maintain their external volume.

In the 20th century, its height was increased, losing its original compositional unity, and it began to house the commercial and catering uses that exist today.

In the seventies, the demolition of two of the five houses that made it up made it impossible to recognise the block as an urban ensemble.
