Sobre este lugar
Building constructed between 1590 and 1597 according to the project of Francisco de Mora, a disciple of Herrera, to house all the storage and services of the Royal Monastery and University of the Real Sitio.
The project for this building is by the architect Francisco de Mora, a disciple and follower of Juan de Herrera. Construction took place between 1590 and 1597 to house, in a single building, all the storage, services and animals of the Hieronymite community, the religious order entrusted with the care and maintenance of the Monastery.
The main building of the Compaña has a square floor plan with an inner courtyard of identical geometry, a first floor with fifteen arches per side on square-section columns, and a second floor of square windows, atop which the slate roofs are situated.
On the ground floor were the mill, the ovens, and the refectory with kitchen, as well as cells for guests and religious members of the mendicant orders. On the upper floor were the artisan workshops and the infirmary. In the south bay, a large rustic-style portal opens for the passage of carriages and livestock. To its left was a single-storey building used for smithies and coach houses.
The main facade of the complex is the South one, in the Herrerian style; it stands out for its sober granite ashlar walls interrupted by the trimmings of the openings, impost and cornice, also made of stonework.
At the end of the 19th century, the buildings were abandoned. This led to their handover, in 1892, to the Order of Saint Augustine, the new community guarding the Monastery, to establish within it the Real Colegio de Estudios Superiores María Cristina, known today as the Real Centro Universitario Escorial-María Cristina, in honour of its protector, the queen regent, María Cristina of Austria-Tuscany.
The declaration of June 3, 1931, as a Historical-Artistic Monument of the Palace and Monastery of San Lorenzo includes, among its annexed premises, the Casa de la Compañía.
Currently, studies in Law, Business Administration and Management, and Chiropractic are taught at the Real Centro de Estudios Superiores Escorial-María Cristina. Additionally, it is one of the venues that hosts the Summer Courses in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
