The need for water to cool drinks and food, as well as for curative purposes, led to the construction of several wells in the El Escorial area. This well, possibly built following the designs of Francisco de Mora, was used not only to store snow accumulated during the winter but also to store that which was brought wrapped in ferns, straw, and broom from the Pozo de Cuelgamuros. Since the beginning of the 18th century, the crown has actively participated in the profits from its sale, which are largely used for the maintenance of the Royal Sites.
