According to Fray José de Sigüenza, the orchard was situated in the best land "known to exist for many leagues". It was surrounded by a large stone wall of about 8000 feet, which is presumed to have been the work of Francisco de Mora, between 1587 and 1588. The wall had four gates (Calleja Larga, Bosquecillo, La Herrería and La Compaña). The orchard was divided into several streets and plots where a wide variety of fruit trees and vegetables were planted.
