Historia y patrimonio

The Royal Coach Houses are a historic complex originating from the merger of the Coach Houses of the Marquis of Valdecarzana and the House and Stables of Juan Esteban, both designed by architect Juan Esteban in 1771 and 1767, respectively. They were commissioned by Charles III to serve the King and the Court during the Royal Days, especially in autumn, when the royal family moved to San Lorenzo de El Escorial.

For approximately a century, the complex was linked to the Royal House and met the transport needs for people, luggage and stables. The Casa y Cuadras de Juan Esteban had a ground floor and a main floor with rooms, as well as a stable with sixty-three spaces that served as accommodation, an infirmary and a grooming parlour for the stables.

In the 19th century, the Cocheras del Marqués de Valdecarzana were transformed into a seasonal palace, preserving part of its walls and adding new rooms. Later, they became residential housing and were joined with the Casa y Cuadras de Juan Esteban. In 1870, the complex passed into private hands and, at the end of the 19th century, it was used as a seasonal residence. At the end of the 1970s, the buildings formed the current Cocheras Reales.

Currently, the preserved part includes the House of Travel Trades (Casa de los Oficios del Viaje), the Regalero's House and Stable (Casa y Cuadra del Regalero) and a central garden. It is a private property that houses a valuable collection dedicated to the history, operation and activities of the Coach Houses between 1771 and 1870. This collection brings together unique pieces such as horse-drawn carriages, sledges, sedan chairs, harnesses, furniture, tools, maps, books, paintings and travel gear, with works dating from the 16th century and, especially, the 18th and 19th centuries.
