During the reign of Charles III, and in the year 1768, this building was constructed by the most illustrious Congregation of San Cayetano y Animas, dedicating it as a stopover called «POSADA DE LAS ANIMAS», whose profits were dedicated to the worship of the Blessed Souls in Purgatory.
This building was constructed according to the plans of the distinguished architect Juan de Villanueva, who also created the so-called «Casita del Príncipe, de Abajo» in this Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, as well as the Prado Museum in Madrid.
This building is known as "La Casa del Balcón de Piedra", due to its magnificent balcony located at the top of the house's main entrance.
This Inn also served as a refuge for many illustrious people who fled during the French invasion.
We are a restaurant located in the centre of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, just a few metres from the monastery. The function of this large house since its origins was as an inn for travellers and court staff during the seasons when the king moved to the monastery.
It opened in 1961 as a restaurant by Mr. Virgilio López and currently, following tradition, it is managed by his children. Over the years, numerous figures from politics, culture, sport and entertainment have visited.
We have four dining rooms with a capacity for 140 people and a tavern, all of which are decorated with objects from the period.
Our cuisine is primarily Castilian, highlighting roasts, red meats and fresh fish, without forgetting some great typical starters from the area; homemade cakes stand out among the desserts. As for the wines, we have a short but selected list with high turnover.
We have bread for coeliacs, as well as numerous gluten-free dishes.
